Artificial intelligence (AI) is the key technology of digitization. AI has entered our everyday lives through digital speech assistants, intelligent household appliances and autonomous vehicles. In the working world, it is used in many areas, such as real-time fraud detection in banking, production with the help of cooperative robots, in retail to optimize logistics, in healthcare, or in intelligent mobility concepts. AI will strongly influence the economy in the coming years. It is all about fundamental changes, not about short-term ups and downs.

How is the Applied Artificial Intelligence program different from computer science studies?

While in computer science studies the field of computer science is covered in its entirety, the study of Applied Artificial Intelligence focuses on certain areas. Core topics of the AKI program are Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Visual Analytics, Deep Learning, and Autonomous Systems. Students learn to develop intelligent systems to teach machines abilities which approach or even exceed human intelligence. These include machine perception, machine learning, planning and automatic decision-making. Programming with Python and Java, software engineering and data management are further important skills that are taught as part of the program. 

Studying computer science also involves topics such as technical computer science, operating systems, and hardware-related programming, which however are not part of the Applied Artificial Intelligence program.

What prior skills are required for the Applied Artificial Intelligence study program?

No previous experience in programming is necessary, as this is taught during the basic study phase. You should have curiosity, enjoy creative and structured problem solving and familiarizing yourself with new topics. Openness towards teamwork and an interest in all aspects of AI and digitization are further good prerequisites for the program. You should also not be afraid of dealing with mathematics.

How do I get off to a good start in my studies?

Hochschule Offenburg offers a number of preparatory courses before the actual start of lectures as a bridge between school/work and studying. Previous participants have found these preparatory courses especially helpful. They take place two weeks before the beginning of the semester and are taught by experienced instructors, with the contents closely coordinated with the first-semester lectures. The groups are divided according to courses of study, and small group sizes allow for individual questions and feedback.
